Astronomers thought a neutron-star collision went straight from a split-second gamma-ray flash to a slow afterglow. The Einstein Probe just caught the chapter in between: a ten-minute burst of soft X-rays that conventional telescopes always arrived too late to see. The team behind the event EP250704a argues this hidden phase isn't rare, we've simply been missing it.
