The worlds that outlived their star: a dead white dwarf ringed by a double disc of debris

Using ESO’s Very Large Telescope, astronomers have found the white dwarf WD J1328−1450 encircled by two distinct rings of planetary debris, apparently shepherded by two surviving bodies — one asteroid-sized, the other as large as Pluto. The first stable double debris disc of its kind, it offers a rare preview of how our own Solar System may end.

When a Sun-like star dies as a white dwarf, it often shreds its leftover planets into a disc of rocky debris. Astronomers using ESO’s Very Large Telescope have now found a white dwarf, WD J1328−1450, wrapped in not one but two distinct rings, apparently shepherded by two surviving bodies — one asteroid-sized, the other as large as Pluto. The first stable double debris disc of its kind, it is a rare preview of how our own Solar System may one day end. We separate what was seen from what is inferred.
