Some cosmic neutrinos may come from faint radio flares that other telescopes miss

Using the VLASS radio survey and IceCube’s neutrino catalog, a team led from the University of Wisconsin-Madison finds a > 2σ hint that faint radio flares may contribute about 13% of the universe’s astrophysical neutrinos — and that roughly 90% of those flares are invisible to γ-ray and X-ray telescopes.

Neutrinos stream out of the universe’s most violent engines and point straight back to their source — yet after a decade of hunting, only a couple of their origins are known. Now a deep radio survey offers a fresh clue: faint radio flares, most of them invisible to γ-ray and X-ray telescopes, may produce about 13% of the cosmic neutrinos IceCube detects. We explain the finding, and why a > 2σ hint is a sign to watch, not yet a discovery.
